Summer's here, let's hit the beach. With a camera that is. Whether you're trying to get a shot of that spectacular sand castle your kids just built before the waves wash it away or the sun as it drops into the ocean, beach photography can produce magnificent results. With a few tips, you're beach photographs will be amazing. So grab your camera bag and head out to the nearest beach for some fun in the sun.

First off, there's more to the beach than sand and water. Look for points of interest, they are everywhere. A long stretch of smooth, empty beach with a single set of footprints can make a most impressive photograph. Look for the unique, the impressive. Two children at the water's edge jumping the small waves. A flock of brown pelicans flying just above the ocean's surface. A beautiful starfish nestled in a shallow pool along the jetty. These will make a priceless photo album that your family will treasure for years.

Unless you live in an area where you enjoy stretches of remote beaches, try timing your trips to the beach for your photo sessions when there aren't as many people. Early in the morning or late in the evening. This will allow you to photograph at your leisure without trying to avoid having strangers in your beautiful beach shots. Another benefit to photographing during these times of the day is atmosphere lighting. You avoid the harsh brightness of the sun which can wash out the color of your pictures. If you plan on photographing sunrises or sunsets, remember to pack a tripod in your camera bag.

When taking your beach photo, make sure your horizon is straight and off center. Always follow the rule of thirds. Keep the horizon either in the top or the bottom of the picture, never in the center, it adds interest. Also, make sure there is nothing in the picture you don't want before you snap the shot, such as a careless persons trash left behind on the beach.

The Camera Lens -- Zoom Vs. Prime

The first thing you need to decide on when buying or setting out to use a lens is whether you want a zoom lens or a prime lens. That is, a lens with only one fixed focal length. Zoom lenses may look like the obvious choice for many, since you’ll get all the different focal lengths it covers in one-and-the-same lens. It is very flexible and you don’t have to carry extra lenses and waste time swapping from one lens to the other. Want to capture the grand landscape? Zoom out and click. Want to capture someone’s face expression? Zoom in and click. These are definitely big advantages over prime lenses, where you’re stuck with the same focal length. But prime lenses have their advantages too. Generally speaking, they’re smaller, faster, cheaper, sharper, have less distortion and are less prone to damage than zoom lenses. Worth considering suddenly, aren’t they? Let’s have a more detailed look at the primes.

A fast lens, you say?Prime lenses don’t use as many lens elements (layers of glass) inside them as zoom lenses do. And that’s the key, they are more simple constructions and hence smaller and cheaper. Now what’s this about primes being fast? It’s still a piece of glass, right? Not a racing car! Well, when photographers talk about a lens being fast, it’s actually a bit of nonsense. What they should be saying is that the lens has a big aperture which allows for more light to pass through the lens, thus allowing the camera to nail the correct exposure faster. It’s just easier to say that ‘the lens is fast!’. Using one of these ‘fast lenses’ gives you a few extra possibilities. You can easier freeze and capture high-speed action situations (big aperture and short shutter speed) and you can easier take hand-held pictures in low-light conditions (big aperture and longer shutter speed). Just notice that when you’re using a big aperture, the area of sharpness (the ‘depth of field’) becomes smaller. Things in front an behind of your focus point will be rendered unsharp. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, it can help to attract attention to the main subject of your photo and away from any background clutter. The larger the aperture and the larger focal length you use, the smaller your focus area will be.

But back to prime lenses being simple constructions, their other advantages I mentioned above were their superior sharpness and less distortion. Especially the sharpness can be useful to you if you plan on submitting photos to a stock agency. Selling 10 to 20 Mega-pixel photos requires excellent performance from your lens.

And finally, because prime lenses can’t zoom, there’s one less thing that can break!

Choosing between zooms and primes isn’t always that simple. Furthermore, some people feel that the single focal length of primes restricts them while others find it liberating that they have that one thing less to think about. Personally, I use both zooms and primes. When I’m in a fast-changing situation with things happening all around me, I prefer the flexibility of the zoom. But when I go out on a shoot with a special expression in mind, I prefer to use the appropriate wide or long prime lens.

Turning Colour Photos Into Black-and-white

Black and white photography has it’s own charm. Colours are great, but they can create a disharmony of clashing colours and draw attention away from shapes, textures and compositional elements in your photograph. If these are more important to you than colours, consider converting your picture into black-and-white. In the old days before digital photography, you had to decide before you took the picture weather you’d want to use a colour-film or a black-and-white film. Today, with a few clicks in an image editing program you can turn colour into black and white.

There is several ways of doing this in Photoshop, which this tutorial is based on -- similar effects can be achieved in most other professional image editing programs.

Just click on ‘greyscale’ or alternatively set the colour saturation to zero. Slightly more advanced, use the ‘channel mixer’ and tick the check-box called ‘monochrome’. But the most powerful way of converting your colour photo to black-and-white is a rarely documented method using a combination of ‘colour balance’ and ‘saturation’. Using this method is slightly more complicated, but ever so much more powerful. You have complete control over how your colours are transformed into black and white. Here’s how you do it:

1. First turn on the ‘layer box’ (Windows > Layers).

2. Click on the little ‘adjustment layers’ icon in the bottom and choose ‘colour balance’. Click OK when the dialog window opens.

3. Click ‘adjustment layers’ again, this time choosing ‘hue/saturation’. Immediately, set ‘saturation’ to zero and push OK.Your image is now black-and-white, but here’s where it gets really neat:

4. Double-click on the adjustment layer you created in step 2, called ‘colour

balance’.

You now have the possibility to adjust each of the 3 sliders to the left and right, thereby adjusting the way each of these colours are transformed into black and white! This has the same effect as using a colour filter in front of your lens and can make some colours stand out compared to others. Reddish skin-tones, the blue sky, the green grass and foliage, all these and more can selectively be lightened and darkened in the black-and-white rendition, giving you great control over contrast and texture in your photo -- much more powerful than the other greyscale-options that leave average red, green and blue colours with the same boring grey.

But wait, there’s even more: Notice the 3 small radio buttons in the bottom saying ‘shadows’, ‘midtones’ and ‘highlights’? By default the ‘midtones’ is selected, but selecting one of the other two allows you to only adjust the darkest or lightest tones respectively. A good use for this is when you wish to bring out some of the details hidden in the dark shadows of your image. Choose ‘shadows’ and make sure the ‘preserve luminosity’ check-box is NOT selected. Then crank up all 3 sliders by the same amount and voilá, your shadow details come to light!

5. When you’re done, select ‘layers > flatten Image’ on the main menu and save the result!

Everything that you will look for in good quality archival storage boxes for your photos are things that you will want in your framing and matting supplies. These too should be treated with high-pH buffering agents that protect the surface of the photo from acid damage.

In fact, any photos that you put into archival storage should be affixed to alkaline mount board before being placed into the proper clear bags in order to prevent them from curling up over time.

Doll Collecting - Why We Do It

I have always found dolls and bears appealing as collectibles because a person can hug them. With a collection of fine stained glass or metal objects, one doesn't have that same freedom. Glass is cold. Bears' fur is soft and warm. Humor aside, another advantage for the doll collector is being the "parent" to a "child" whose psyche can't be warped with poor parenting skills or lack of experience. Dolls don't care if they sit on the bed or a shelf for weeks. Dolls aren't picky about their outfits-- pink frills or blue sailboats--all ok. Dolls not anatomoically correct (and even some that are) don't mind being dressed as a boy or a girl. And when you are done, they sit where you put them without running around getting dirt and schmutz on their new clean clothes. Research in child development even supports the idea that we humans having been hardwired to bond to young for survival of our species, are attracted to teddy bears and dolls because of the round cheeks and big eyes, round bellies so similar to those of human babies. Price can be an issue in doll collecting. If a person prefers the artist doll, limited edition or one-of-a-kind it is possible to pay thousands of dollars and to wait several years for a new piece. On the other hand, Ashton-Drake type collectibles make dolls affordable for most budgets. And yet further still on the scale, a person can find a loveable doll in a thrift store or kids' shop just because it was love at first sight.

To be fair, Barbie does seem to endure and remain ageless and isn't she lucky? even though Ken went by the wayside, usurped by an Australian surfer dude after 40 years. Poor guy! Barbie stands up to all the new exciting fashion doll creations as well. The aisles of Toys R Us contain very good quality vinyl play dolls made by German and Spanish companies who can become under the watchful eyes and skilled hands of "Re-born" artists another class of one-of-a-kind collectible babies. Left to their own devices these dolls make wonderful durable play babies for children. It is possible to search online for dolls and bears in several ways. If you like a particular artist you can search that artist. If you like a particular shop you can start there. Many shops and artists have their own websites. Know what you like. Classified ads for doll shows. Trade magazines.

It is up to the individual collector whether he or she keeps the doll out. Puts it in a cabinet or keeps it boxed with acid free paper or to play with it. A lot depends on life style. A person with animal pets may find it challenging to keep the bear or doll out simply because four footed folks do find them tasty to chew and in worse cases, tempting to mark on. I have one dog who loves to carry a teddy bear in her mouth. She is a fierce protector! But just in case, she will bark at you around the dolly she carries. Certain fabrics, vinyls, and resins are vulnerable to sunlight which can cause fading and damage. Others are temperature sensitive. Porcelain breaks. Many folks have made the mistake of trying to remove marks on vinyl dolls with acetone only to lose the paint as well! I've had poorly fired resin dolls crack and lose body parts. Dust can damage dolls and bears as well. Whatever way displayed, it is often important to keep not only the box the doll came in but also the tags, receipts, papers and ecertificates. This completes the piece's provenance and in the event of re-sale adds much to the worth. Some prefer rotating the doll or bear so it spends some of its time boxed and protected from the elements. To sum things up, don't be shy or embarrasssed or afraid to like dolls or bears. They are not only for children. We carry good memories of these friends with us into adulthood. Dolls and bears make good photo subjects. Why? They don't move for one thing. Don't get red-eye. You can go back and back . With today's digital cameras you can see immediately if your shot succeeded and re-do it for other effects. You can cheat with an over-large outfit folded around behind the doll or use a "real" prop like an actual cookie with a child doll and fool the eye of the viewer. Dolls and bears in photography take us into other worlds, other lives. Visual fairy tales. How wonderful to be able to glimpse a moment of someone else's story? Let's face it taking pictures of dolls and bears is just plain fun. Yes, it is also work. Sometimes, like with any other subject the picture just does not come together and all the photographer ends up with is a headache. But lots of times the camera "sees" and you come away from the experience with a picture of magic in your hand.

What elements do you put in a photo? Well, as with any kind of photography simplicity is best. Let's consider the photography done on Annette Himstedt's website for a fairly well-known example. There are not a lot of distractions from the doll! While her work endeavors to capture "real children" in her doll creations, so does good doll photography of any doll. A simple prop like a ball or a toy to be held, a seat on a bale of hay, a real guinea pig at the feet of a boy doll such as I have done...this helps make a good composition. Background of things in the same scale as the doll. Good light ,simple composition-remember your subject is not going to run off in the middle of your shoot! Believe what you see when you are all through.

Wall art, greeting cards, posters, advertising photos, gallery work, shows--one thing can be said with absolute certainty. While many many people are out there taking garden shots, macro insects, nature, urban blight, buildings, weddings, headstones and cute pets, a good doll and bear photographer is hard to find.

A Day At The Beach Can Ruin Your Camera

The beach is a place we go to have fun. Enjoy the sun, the sand, and the ocean. Many of us also take the opportunity to record those moments with our cameras. Unfortunately, those beautiful beach shots can take their toll on our cameras and accessories. The sun, sand, moisture, and salt can all have a disastrous impact on our valuable equipment. Keeping cameras and accessories safe and clean under normal conditions is important, but it becomes imperative during and after a day at the beach.

The first stage of protection is obviously the camera bag. Choose one that has inner pockets that do double duty in keeping sand out. A camera with sand inside the case is quickly ruined, grinding gears don't move well. A water resistant fabric is always advisable to keep out humidity and moisture. Whenever you're not using your camera, keep it safely in your camera bag. Never use your camera with wet, sandy, or oily hands. And, avoid taking it out of your camera bag if the ocean breezes are blowing the sand around.

If it's absolutely necessary to make changes on your camera at the beach, take every possible precaution. If you've been swimming in the ocean, wash and dry your hands to remove any salt before working on your camera. Salt will corrode. If you're going to be on a beach that doesn't have fresh water, take wipes to clean your hands. Find a place away from the water, in a sheltered location with no wind or people to kick up the sand. Make all your changes as quickly as you can to avoid any mishaps. If you're changing lenses, make sure you secure the removed lens back in your camera bag and close it up tight.

A small investment in a filter for your camera is another way of protecting it during your days at the beach. Actually it gives you dual benefits. You not only get the optical benefits of a filter, but you get the protection for you expensive lens from the sand and salt.

When taking pictures by the ocean, take extra care not to allow your camera to get wet. The salt water will severely damage your equipment. If you do get splashed, dry the camera thoroughly and immediately. When you get home from a day at the beach, you need to clean all your equipment properly. You want to wipe it down thoroughly with a soft cloth to remove all salt and sand residue. There are some very effective camera cleaning kits on the market which include all the tools needed to do a detailed job.

If you plan on doing a lot of photography at the beach, or other bodies of water, you might want to consider investing in one of the amphibious cameras that are available. Tip Number One:The first tip is pretty easy. Keep it simple. That’s all.What I mean by this is that you should try to keep your photo as simple as you can. Now, when you master simplicity then you can make more complex shots, however, try to keep it simple right now. To keep it simple here are some guidelines

_Get closer to the subject you’re photographing. This will make the subject more pronounced and stand out more. It will also make for less clutter as the subject will take up more of the frame

_Get Down Low and Shoot up. This will make the shot simpler since you won’t have all that clutter behind the subject and only the sky.

_Get Higher and shoot down. This will make it so the background is the ground

and not the cluttered background that would usually be there_Use a shallow depth of field.

Tip Number Two:The second tip is a little more detailed. Basically, keep everything that isn’t of importance and minimize or remove it. For example, if you photograph a subject that is green and there are bright red objects of unimportance around this subject. Those red objects are of no importance and are distracting the viewer from the true subject. Get rid of those red objects, unsaturated them in an editing program, do something so that the picture isn’t so complex and confusing.

Tip Number Three:Have a solid concept you want and stick with it throughout. Have you ever written a paper and been criticized that it goes everywhere? The same can happen when taking pictures. You want your picture to be focused on primarily one theme. For example, the theme could be peace. You could have a picture of a couple at a beach enjoying a drink. Now, if there’s a homeless man in the background that’s going to be distracting from the main theme of peace.

It's A Great Time To Photograph At The Zoo

Where else can you go and spend a day photographing wild and exotic animals for just a few dollar admittance fee? The zoo, of course! You can take your time to get the perfect shots in a relatively safe environment. Keep in mind you are dealing with wild animals. And, if you choose to take the opportunity to get up close for that terrific shot of the llama, don't be surprised if she spits at you. Have your camera bag ready to go with all the equipment you'll need for an easy day at the zoo. Consider using your rolling backpack camera bag to make maneuvering through the zoo effortless. Besides your camera and telephoto lens, take along a tripod, if your zoo allows them. If not, ask if a string tripod would be allowed. They're not as effective, but they will offer some stability. Have plenty of film or memory cards and batteries. If you have a lens hood, take it along. Since you won't necessarily be able to have the sun where you want it and you will also be taking shots through glass, you'll probably be able put one to good use.
Go early in the morning, this is when the animals are the most active and there are fewer people to have to shoot around. If you haven't done it ahead of time, when you arrive, check out the zoo activities. Feeding times and any exhibits you may especially want to photograph are good to have pre-planned. If your zoo has an aquatic exhibit with performances, schedule your day to be in that area to catch the show. You should be able to get some great action shots. But be careful where you stand. If the zoo has large animal displays, people in the front tend to get pretty soaked and we all know water and cameras don't mix. You're better off positioning yourself up and back and using your telephoto lens. Be polite. Don't forget that the primary purpose of the zoo is for everyone, especially families, to enjoy a day together viewing and learning about the animals. Don't spread out and restrict the view of other visitors for extended periods of time. If your zoo does allow tripods, be courteous in setting it up. Choose a location where you can get your shot without inconveniencing others. Don't set up on the sidewalks. Follow the rules and be considerate of the other visitors. You can get phenomenal shots and still operate safely. Again follow the rules. Never cross barriers to get a closer view. The animals don't understand you're just trying to take their picture. To some of them, you could be breakfast. Safety always needs to come first. With the right equipment and techniques, you don't have to climb fences to get that awesome polar bear picture. You've packed the right equipment in your camera bag to photograph safely. You can use a shallow depth of field to blur any unwanted background and produce a great wildlife photograph. Many of our nation's zoos are housing their animals in more natural settings, without the use of bars. There are still, however, many zoos with animals in cages. To photograph through a cage try to find a wide opening, if there is one. To take a picture through the bars, use a longer focal length and a wider aperture and get as close as you can, safely. Be patient and take your shot when the animal moves towards the back of the cage. When photographing in glass enclosed exhibits, use your lens hood to reduce any glare. If you don't have a lens hood and see glare in the glass, just move slightly until the glare disappears. If you're in a dimly light, glass-enclosed exhibit and need your flash, use a diffuser and angle your camera to the glass to avoid glare from the flash. If you follow these simple tips, you should end the day with a camera bag full of film or memory cards loaded with fabulous wildlife images. Just remember; be prepared, follow the rules, stay safe, be polite, and have a great day at the zoo.
